The Community Radiology programme provides access to radiology services to referred clients to facilitate a prompt, cost effective and accurate diagnosis.
The service offers people who meet the clinical criteria and who are from Quintile 4 or 5, or have a Community Services Card or High User Health Card are able to access subsidised radiology.
This programme provides free access to a range of investigations where the referring doctor considers this is required as a part of their clinical management and the person may otherwise not be able to access this.
The programme excludes procedures that are covered under:
- maternity services
- nuclear medicine and MRI scans
- the breast screening programme (there are some exceptions for breast screening and patients should discuss these with their GP).
Providers and appointments
Referrals are sent electronically to the provider the patient and doctor elect to use. One of the three contracted providers – Valley Ultrasound, Hutt Valley Imaging (DHB Radiology Service) or Pacific Radiology will usually make contact with the patient to arrange a time.
Referred patients can also call one of these providers to make their own appointments.
Valley Ultrasound only provide ultrasound services.
