Interpreting NZ telephone interpreting service provides interpreters for approximately 70 languages. General practices can book an interpreter to assist in communicating with non-English speaking patients. A current list of these languages can be found at any time on www.interpret.org.nz
Eligibility and costs
The service is available to anyone enrolled with a Te Awakairangi Health Network practice requiring translation services in a primary care setting, and there is no cost to them or the practice.
Interpreting NZ is available to be contacted twenty hours a day, seven days a week, to provide interpreters over the phone. General practices can book an interpreter by phone, email or online.
The interpreters at Interpreting NZ have completed an Introductory Interpreting course (classes, contact time, plus extensive self-directed learning); have been assessed for their competence in English, their second language and interpreting skills; are contracted to undertake continuing professional development; have been chosen on the basis of personal suitability and their appropriateness within their ethnic community; are bound by a Code of Ethics; and are evaluated regularly.
